This Friday and Sunday our junior and senior girls AFL teams travel up to the Sunshine Coast to tackle the best schools in Qld in the QCup state finals. The girls have progressed through the different stages to now be in the top 4 in Qld and a shot at being crowned state champions.
For the senior girls they are aiming to defend the title they won last year when they knocked off PBC in the final in a thrilling contest. Led by stars of Qld women’s footy, Havana Harris, Nyalli Milne and Annabelle Foat, the girls will need to perform at their very best to go back-to-back. Sienna McMullen and Harriette Banner are devastating losses after both requiring surgery after suffering injuries. All girls will need to be on their game to cover two really important members of the team.
The junior girls have overcome a slow start to the season to be hitting their straps at the right end of the year. They defeated highly rated schools Cavendish Rd and Marymount College in comprehensive fashion through the finals to once again return to the big dance after missing out last year. The girls have been well led by senior players Immi Dowker, Eva Mayes, Ryne Spence and Ada Fraser and with livewires Tobi Skalij, Jade Radford and Charlee Gardner firing, the girls are ready to go.
Both teams play the north Qld winners. The seniors play The Cathedral College from Rockhampton today at 2pm and the juniors play St Andrew’s College from Cairns at 6.30pm tonight . The winners qualify for the grand finals on Sunday with the juniors playing at 9am and seniors at 1.30pm.
The girls have been put through their paces all year by Mr Nicoll, Mr Foat and Miss Evert. All three coaches are very confident the girls can go on with the job, especially if they all play to their capabilities and play great team football.
Good luck to our mighty girls AFL teams over the weekend and let’s hope we can bring home the holy grail of school AFL again. Go Vikings!!
