wLast week our Year 7 and 8 AFL Aspire students had the exciting opportunity to participate in the “Sun for a Day”program at the Gold Coast Suns’ Austworld Centre High Performance and Training Facility in Carrara.
The day provided students with a unique behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be an elite AFL athlete. Guided by Gold Coast Suns AFLW player Katie Lynch, students toured the club’s state-of-the-art training, meeting and recovery facilities, explored the Suns’ training change rooms, and even had the chance to sit in the locker of their favourite AFL and AFLW players. Our students also got to see the men’s team going through their training in preparation for their big QClash against the Brisbane Lions.
Students also visited People First Stadium, where they toured the player change rooms, meeting rooms and corporate facilities. One of the highlights of the day was a leadership session held in a corporate box overlooking the stadium, where students gained valuable insights into the importance of leadership, teamwork and professionalism in elite sport.
The experience concluded with an on-field training session led by Suns AFLW player Charlotte Wilson, giving students the opportunity to learn new skills and train like professional footballers.
The AFL Aspire students represented Varsity College exceptionally well throughout the day, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect and a genuine passion for learning. We thank the Gold Coast Suns for providing such an inspiring experience and helping our students gain a greater understanding of the pathways and opportunities available within the AFL industry.
