Yesterday, 32 students from the Senior Campus Generation Green were joined by 16 students from the Junior Campus to participate in Varsity’s Annual Clean Up Australia School Event. We spent nearly 2 hours collecting litter on the Senior campus and auditing this rubbish. Here is some of what we found:
- Nearly a kilo of soft plastics (that is a HUGE mound)
- 62 10cent containers
- 3.47kg of compostable food
- 104g of plastic sauce packets
- 247 g of metal
- 146 g of aluminium
- 1.6kg of hard plastics
- 400g of paper and cardboard
Even though rubbish is, at best, unpleasant, the students I spoke with left the experience happy to have contributed to making our community cleaner and safer for our wildlife. Having an opportunity for our senior and junior students to work together towards a common goal is also a highlight of the afternoon.
All Varsity College families are invited to attend the Division 11 Clean Up Australia Day + Tree Giveaway from 9.00am this Sunday, at Varsity Lakes Community Resource Centre, Mattocks Rd.
