A sombre, yet important first day of our itinerary. We had an in depth- guided tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau – the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War. Students were split in 2 groups, and guided through a range of exhibitions, barracks, the extensive grounds as well as the gas chamber and crematorium. Students were able to stand in the watch tower at Birkenau, allowing them to take in the scale of the camp. The weather was wet and windy, but the students showed incredible respect throughout the tour, and we were certainly very proud of their resilience – already acting like seasoned travellers!
Following our tour, we were taken on a scenic drive through the Polish countryside and villages, before finishing the day with a traditional Polish dinner at Skansen Smaków which was beautiful!
