Day 9 – Australian National Memorial

Today we travelled out of the city to the battlefields of World War I. We visited the Australian National Memorial and Sir John Monash Centre. Here, the students explored an interactive exhibition of Australia’s involvement in World War I. We then strolled the lawn cemetery and remembrance wall before making our way to Villers-Bretonneux, a small French village liberated by Australian forces during the war. We visited the Victoria School there, a school built by funds raised by Australia following the war. This was an important part of our trip, and a visit that brought about a strong sense of national pride and reflection on the bravery, courage and sacrifice of Australians who served and lost their lives on these fields.
