Earlier this term 2 year 10 and 2 year 11 Varsity College students attended the first sitting of the 2024 Gold Coast Junior Council. Ayati Gor and Tahani Sarwar in Year 10 and Charlie Sochanik and Madison McGregor in Year 11 attended HOTA and the God Council Chambers to see Madison being sworn in as an Executive Member of the 2024 Junior Council. All students had the opportunity to meet current Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate and Division 11 Councillor, Hermann Vorster.
Students attend Junior Council one day a term over 2 years (years 10 and 11) along with representative from other High School on the Gold Coast. The two-year program provides students with the opportunity to actively participate in their local community, by developing an understanding of local government, discussing and raising awareness of current community issues, and enhancing skills required for effective advocacy, such as public speaking and team work, through workshops and volunteer opportunities.
