We are thrilled to announce that training for the 2024 Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge has officially begun! This past weekend, our teams tackled challenging trails in Springbrook and Nerang National Park, marking the start of an intensive training program.
This year, we have a record 21 teams participating, comprising 84 students and 21 staff and parent volunteers as team leaders. Our teams will be taking on either the 30km, 48km, or 96km events, which will push their physical and mental limits.
The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge is an annual event that raises funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, a charity that supports young Australians in developing resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills. The Challenge is inspired by the famous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, which was a pivotal battleground during World War II.
Throughout our training sessions, we will be hiking some of the steepest trails around the Gold Coast, including Hellfire Pass, Polly’s Kitchen Trail, Mount Nimmel, and Mount Fairview, as well as numerous trails in Nerang National Park. Our participants will learn valuable skills and strategies to overcome obstacles and work together as a team.
This week, we had our first of two First Aid and Training Seminars led by the highly experienced Scott Whimpey. Scott shared essential knowledge on gear preparation, nutrition, basic first aid, and expectation setting, preparing our participants for the challenge ahead.
The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge will take place on July 13th, and we look forward to cheering on our teams as they take on this remarkable challenge!
