Recently, 32 Aspire Robotics students went to Merrimac High School to compete in the Regional Finals of Sumo Robotics. Just like the real Sumo, our students had to battle their opponent on the Sumo Ring and try and push them out in a best of three match. The competition was very even and very exciting to watch, with many close games played.
There were over 700 games played by 32 teams representing seven schools from our region. We were very fortunate to get one of our teams into the finals. Unfortunately, we were beaten 2-1 and did not progress, but a big congratulations to Toby, Xavier, Aston and Levent for making it so far!
One of our teams won the Phoenix award, given to the team the judges deemed to be the one that never gave up. Whilst they may not have won many matches, they went away and improved their robot and code and turned up for every game with a huge smile on their faces and showed what we call ‘Gracious Professionalism”. It is an awesome award to win as it shows so much about character strengths. Our winners, Maggie, Lauren, Jamie and Ian, are all first-time competitors and are to be congratulated.
