Rowing State Championships & Season Wrap Up

As the 2024 school rowing season comes to a close, we have so much to reflect on and celebrate. The success we’ve seen this year is a direct result of the incredible commitment from our athletes, coaches and parents. From our ASPIRE squad of 35 athletes, an outstanding 28 qualified to represent our College at the Queensland State Championship Regatta; a remarkable feat that showcases the talent, determination, and perseverance within our squad.

7 of our senior students also earned selection for the prestigious South Coast Team, with our Director of Rowing also chosen as the team’s coach. This honour recognises athletes for their exceptional performance and potential. South Coast selects only 20 athletes in total from both boys’ and girls’ squads from across our region for rowing. It is a testament to the strength of our rowing program that the majority of student representatives from a single school came from our squad in 2024. In a sport where we compete against numerous elite private schools, being the only state school from our region makes this achievement especially meaningful. This brings immense pride to our College and highlights the talent and competitiveness of our program.

The Queensland State Championship Regatta was an incredible showcase of our athletes’ efforts. Competing in a total of 23 events across three days of competition, our rowers left everything on the water, giving their all in each and every race. The hard work during training paid off, with many of our athletes achieving personal bests. 10 of our events progressed through to the semi-finals, and 10 made it through to the finals – a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about the depth and talent within our team. Many of the races for medal contention were fiercely competitive, and we can hold our heads high knowing that we were right there in the mix. More than just the competition, this season was about the journey – the personal growth and the countless experiences learnt along the way. The camaraderie that developed throughout the season, both on and off the water, was one of the most rewarding aspects of the year. Whether it was the shared victories, or the support in moments of challenge, our Varsity rowing community showed what it means to be a true team.

Of course, this season would not have been possible without the incredible support network that surrounds our rowing program. Thank you to our dedicated coaching team, who not only guided our athletes with their expertise but also provided endless encouragement, mentorship, and motivation. We also want to extend our deepest thanks to our RSG; the parent body supporting our students who are involved in our rowing program. The time, energy, and resources you all commit in spearheading various fundraising initiatives as well as supporting the program’s behind-the-scenes efforts is outstanding and does make a huge difference to our season. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when a group of individuals comes together with a shared purpose and a drive to succeed. To our athletes, coaches, parents, and supporters – thank you for making this season an unforgettable journey.
