AFL QCup Finals

Over the weekend, the AFL QCup Finals took centre stage — the pinnacle of school AFL in Queensland, bringing together the top four qualifying teams from a four-month knockout tournament to battle for state bragging rights. The preliminary finals were held on Friday, followed by the grand finals on Sunday, showcasing the very best of school AFL talent across the state.

The competition featured three divisions — Years 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12 — with this year marking the inaugural Year 9/10 Girls Division.

The Varsity Vikings AFL program, under the outstanding guidance of Mr Foat, Mr Nicoll, and Ms Evert, has long been a powerhouse at this event. Thanks to their dedication and the strong nursery of AFL talent that continues to flourish at our College, Varsity has enjoyed enormous success over the years — including being Open Female Champions in 2023 and runners-up in both the Junior and Senior Female divisions.

This year, Varsity once again rose to the occasion, with two teams qualifying in the top four. On Friday, both the Year 9/10 Boys and Year 9/10 Girls recorded commanding wins in their preliminary finals — the boys defeating Ignatius Park from Townsville, and the girls overcoming Mountain Creek in what Mr Nicoll described as one of the most physical female matches he has ever witnessed.

Sunday marked the “Holy Grail” of Queensland school AFL, as the top two teams faced off for QCup glory. The Year 9/10 Girls battled hard against arch-rivals PBC, recovering from a slow start to hold their own through a strong third and fourth quarter against a dominant opposition who won comfortably in the end. Soon after, the Year 9/10 Boys Grand Final saw our top-ranked Vikings take on St Laurence’s College from Brisbane. In a thrilling, end-to-end contest played in blustery conditions, the lead changed multiple times before a few unfortunate calls went against the Vikings in the final term, leaving them just three goals short at full time.

Despite the narrow misses, 2025 has been another hugely successful year for Varsity Aspire AFL, with our teams once again cementing their place among the state’s elite. A special thank you goes to Mr Foat, Mr Nicoll, and Ms Evert for their ongoing time, effort, and commitment to our students and the success of the Varsity AFL program.

Basketball

In addition to our AFL Success, our Varsity Aspire Sport Basketball Year 9 and 10 Boys and Girls played at the CBSQ state championships on the weekend with the year 9/10 boys finishing an impressive 4th (boys) and the girls 11th in the state which is an amazing achievement. Special shout-out to Aspire Sport head Coach Mr Darragh and his coaching team on the great result and in running one of the best basketball programs in the state.
