Learn more about Varsity College’s Xinyu, and her experience with the Chinese Speech Competition. In Xinyu’s first year, she took home 3rd place! Since, she has encouraged herself to participate in this competition with passion and commitment, leading her to win one 1st, one 2nd and two 3rd in the past 7 years.
My experience in this language competition was that, it’s not only enhancing your ability to understand Chinese, but how to structure specific sentences into paragraphs, while considering a time limit. Memorizing and practicing it out loud with tone marks and speech techniques was also a big part of this competition. Through writing in Chinese, I’ve learnt how to structure each sentence and make it into more complicated sentences, further enhancing my Chinese vocabulary to a higher level. Memorizing and practicing it out loud was the part that took me weeks to master, due to differentiation of languages and work load at school. However, due to the amount of practice, encouragement from family and friends and standing in front of a mirror to repeat my speech, I managed to get feedback from family members and teachers on how to improve on my work and also speaking techniques.

My thoughts of this annual competition was that it was such a wonderful experience to learn, write, speak and more importantly understanding Chinese in all different levels. It is also something I would not regret trying as it enhances your vocabulary, improves your speaking levels and most importantly to participate, learn from other students, and also congratulate on your achievement.
