A twenty-first century gold rush of sorts took place outside the 5DE classroom recently when word of a gold discovery reached the ears of some very keen students. Mrs Hoppitt and Ms Reinekker had carefully staged a bogus letter to be leaked to students alerting the community to a recent finding of gold in the vicinity of the year 5 classroom. It wasn’t long before some very eager prospectors staked their claims and began the search for ‘nuggets’ which had been hidden earlier that morning.
For these students it was a way to gain a genuine personal appreciation of the emotions that ignite the frenzy of a gold rush. They certainly enhanced their understanding of the event that drew people from the other side of the world to Australia, boosting the population through the promise of riches on the goldfields.
