On Wednesday, our Year 6 cohort were lucky enough to be visited by The Hon Karen Andrews MP.
Students were fascinated to learn about the roles and responsibilities of a federal MP, and delighted in hearing a few of the secrets of Parliament House: including the hidden jail cells and the kilometres upon kilometres of corridors and tunnels.
Students heard first-hand the process of a bill passing through both houses of Parliament to become an Act. Interestingly, we also discovered that spies are real!
Minister Andrews kindly answered a range of questions posed by students. These questions ranged from how she manages to work while having to travel extensively, to how funding for projects like our wonder Butterfly Garden, which Minister Andrews was integral in establishing, is decided upon.
Perhaps the most powerful question was about the challenges Minister Andrews has faced as a female in Parliament. Maddison in 6M said;
She inspired the girls in our grade to want to be leaders too.
Varsity College are sincerely grateful for the Honourable Karen Andrews and her time.
